Company History

In the beginning, after Shyla finished her first year of carpentry school, she went to Vancouver Island and not too long after her departure, Tom followed his heart and arrived to stay on Vancouver Island. This decision, looking back, was what gave their own impossible idea of starting a business, possible. Their dreams really started to become real the more they worked together in making valuable business contacts, who later became valuable mentors that helped make their dream of Northern Hart Designs be what it is today!

“If it wasn’t for Shyla’s Parents letting us stay and have space in the shop on Vancouver Island, as well as my mothers, shop back in Prince George, who knows where we would be today,” says Tom, “Having their support was what kept us pushing forward.”

Shyla still has some of Tom’s early efforts from before moving and she refuses to part with them, as its a great reminder to look back on to remember where they started, and just how far they have come over the course of six years. working endlessly in building this amazing creative manufacturing business.

Tom learned to run a CNC (computer numerically controlled) cutter with his Uncle Jim, about ten years ago. The first CNC router he purchased was only 12” by 12”. Over the years, he moved from his basement to a shop. The router has been upsized a few times and is now 32” by 60”.

"If you are ever out at the Tache Meadow Graveyard, take a few minutes to look at the gate. That is a Northern Hart Designs creation that they are very proud of."

Another fire pit was a ball, three feet across, that looks like something out of Dante’s Inferno…or a flaming Pacman. It is big enough for a thirteen-year-old boy to sit in. Fire pits and outdoor furniture and décor are in demand right now. Later, when the weather cools off, people will be asking about the possibilities of custom indoor furniture.

What do we bring to the table?

So, what could Tom and Shyla do for the residents of Prince George and surrounding areas?
On a personal level, do you have a garden worthy of a gate or a trellis or a weathervane that has been designed just for you? How about a set of wooden deck chairs, carved with your family motto? They can laser a special photo onto a wood plaque or maybe a kitchen cabinet door. They do small items too, like special Christmas ornaments and memory boxes. Tom was especially touched by a request to carve a man’s wallet onto a wood plaque in time for his internment.

Northern Hart Designs also supports worthy causes with donations in kind for charity auctions.

Attention to Detail and Customer Service

“I’ve never had a bad review,” says Tom, “And lots of repeat customers!”

Creativity and the ability to express it are at the heart of this business. Right now, about 90% of their customers find them through Facebook. Tom and Shyla are planning the very big step of acquiring a storefront location to allow customers to touch and feel the real things they make, instead of just relying on pictures. They want this to be a spot to showcase their work and maybe feature some of the work that other local artist would like to sell.

Shyla has many skateboards that she would like to personalize and sell, along with other items, such as birdhouse and box kits, and ornaments for  personalizing. As manufacturers, they can probably create the item you want at a more affordable price than you might anticipate.

What about those Pinterest and Instagram inspiration pages? Talk to Tom and Shyla and you may be surprised. By going directly to someone who can manufacture what you want, you may be pleasantly surprised by affordability. Send them a picture and a description of what you want.

Northern Hart Designs wants the chance to make you that something special you’ve been dreaming of for your??? Call, email or message them to find out the possibilities.
